Inventories, Markups and Real Rigidities in Sticky Price Models of the Canadian Economy

Recent New Keynesian models of macroeconomy view nominal cost rigidities, rather than nominal price rigidities, as the key feature that accounts for the observed persistence in output and inflation. Kryvtsov and Midrigan (2010a,b) reassess these conclusions by combining a theory based on nominal rigidities and storable goods with direct evidence on inventories for the U.S.

The Effect of Exchange Rate Movements on Heterogeneous Plants: A Quantile Regression Analysis

In this paper, we examine how the effect of movements in the real exchange rate on manufacturing plants depends on the plant's placement within the productivity distribution. Appreciations of the local currency expose domestic plants to more competition from abroad as export opportunities shrink and import competition intensifies.

Central Bank Haircut Policy

We present a model of central bank collateralized lending to study the optimal choice of the haircut policy. We show that a lending facility provides a bundle of two types of insurance: insurance against liquidity risk as well as insurance against downside risk of the collateral.

Senior Loan Officer Survey - Third-Quarter 2010

The survey results point to an overall easing in business-lending conditions during the third quarter of 2010. Both the price and non-price aspects of business lending eased during the quarter. Note that the balance of opinion indicates only the direction of the change in lending conditions; it does not provide information on the magnitude of the change.

The economic case for global financial sector reform is compelling, and the basic stakes are enormous, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney argued today in Berlin in a lecture that focused on the costs and benefits of reform. "Without credible, coordinated financial reforms, we risk losing the open trading and financial system that has underpinned the economic miracle of recent times," he said.
