Nominations Invited for the Bank of Canada's Law Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence

Effective today, the Bank of Canada is inviting nominations for the third annual Law Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence. This award is presented to one or more police officers, employees, or volunteers of a Canadian law enforcement agency who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and initiative in the fight against counterfeiting of bank notes. Nominations may be submitted by any serving member of a Canadian law enforcement agency.

The Bank of Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), established the Award of Excellence in March 2004 to recognize the efforts of Canadian law enforcement personnel in deterring bank note counterfeiting.

In 2005, Corporal Earle Bailey and Sergeant Peter Hadley, of the Windsor RCMP Commercial Crime Section, received the award for their initiative and determination during a counterfeiting investigation conducted between September 2003 and March 2004. This investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately $1.6 million in counterfeit bank notes and the dismantling of a large counterfeit production facility in the Greater Toronto Area. The efforts of Corporal Bailey and Sergeant Hadley also led to the successful prosecution of a major counterfeiter.

Award recipients will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of three representatives from the Bank of Canada and two from the CACP. They will be honoured at the 2006 CACP conference to be held in St. John's, Newfoundland, in August.

Nominations for the 2006 Law Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence must be received at the Bank of Canada by 31 March 2006.
