Bank of Canada Announces 2005 Recipients of Annual Law-Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence

The Bank of Canada is pleased to announce the 2005 recipients of its annual Law-Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence. Corporal Earle Bailey and Sergeant Peter Hadley, of the Windsor RCMP Commercial Crime Section, were honoured last night at an awards gala during the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police held in Ottawa.

The recipients of the Award of Excellence were selected for their initiative and determination during a counterfeiting investigation conducted between September 2003 and March 2004. This investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately $1.6 million in counterfeit bank notes, and the dismantling of a large counterfeit production facility in the Greater Toronto Area. The efforts of Corporal Bailey and Sergeant Hadley also led to the prosecution of a major counterfeiter.

The Bank of Canada's Law-Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence was established in 2004 to recognize the work of Canadian law-enforcement personnel in deterring and preventing the counterfeiting of bank notes. "The Bank believes that it is important to recognize the efforts of the Windsor RCMP investigators, since they prevented large volumes of counterfeit notes from entering into circulation," said Pierre Duguay, the Bank's Deputy Governor responsible for the issuance of bank notes. "The success of this investigation also reflects a renewed emphasis on counterfeit detection and deterrence by Canada's national police force and other law-enforcement agencies."
