Mark Jewett Appointed General Counsel to the Bank of Canada
The appointment of Mark Jewett as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary to the Bank of Canada has been approved by the Board of Directors of the Bank. Mr. Jewett will work in close collaboration with the Governing Council of the Bank on all management and financial stability matters. He will join the Bank on 25 June 2001.
Mr. Jewett has served as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Public Law and Central Agencies Portfolio, Department of Justice, since 1999 and as Assistant Deputy Minister and Counsel to the Department of Finance, since 1990. He is also legal adviser to the secretariat of the Cabinet Committee for the Economic Union. He has held a number of other senior positions with the Departments of Justice and Finance, the European Commission in Brussels, and the law firm of Debevoise and Plimpton in New York.
Mr. Jewett is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick with degrees in Arts and Law, and of Cambridge University with degrees in International Law. He is a member of the New Brunswick Bar, and was named Queen's Counsel in 1982.
