In Budget 2023, the government announced its intention to hold market consultations on a proposal to consolidate Canada Mortgage Bonds (CMBs) within the regular Government of Canada (GoC) borrowing program. Over June and July 2023, officials from the Department of Finance, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and the Bank of Canada consulted with government securities distributors, institutional investors, mortgage originators and other interested parties on considerations related to this potential consolidation.
Comments received during these consultations were taken into consideration leading up to the government’s CMB policy decision announced in the 2023 Fall Economic Statement.
